The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)
has very specific rules and regulations that are in place to maintain
the safety of our highways, roads and communities. These regulations
require specific drug testing policies and procedures for employees.
If you employ USDOT covered workers
(such as truck drivers, pilots or train operators) you are required by
law to have a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) available to evaluate
employees who test positive for drugs or alcohol. The SAP will
evaluate the employee and make appropriate recommendations regarding
further treatment that should be required.
The SAP works closely with the
employer, medical review officer, testing lab and treatment providers
to assure that the employee is returned to work with a clean bill of
health. The SAP will also make recommendations regarding future
drug/alcohol testing. Lastly, the SAP will follow-up, in some cases
for up to five years, to ensure that there is ongoing monitoring,
rehabilitation, and compliance with USDOT regulations.
LifeWorks offers comprehensive SAP
services as a stand alone service or integrated with our employee
assistance programs.
